Checking you're human…

What an llms.txt file is for

An llms.txt file is a short, readable map of your site written for language models. It names your site, says in a sentence what it is, and lists the pages a reader should start with. A person or a tool that wants a quick summary can read it in a second instead of crawling every page.

It is a convention, not a standard that every assistant follows. It costs very little to add, which makes it a sensible extra once the basics, such as crawler access and readable page text, are in place.

What the draft contains

  • A title. Taken from the title of your home page.
  • A description. Taken from your meta description, when you have one.
  • A list of pages. Up to 30 links from your home page that stay on your own site, each with its link text. Links with no text use the page path instead.

Edit it before you publish

The draft follows your home page, so it reflects your navigation, including pages such as a login or a cart that help nobody. Remove those, give each link a clear name, and put the pages that explain what you do first.

Where the file goes

Save the text as llms.txt and place it at the root of your domain, next to robots.txt, so it loads at /llms.txt. Then run the AI readiness checker to confirm it is found.

Questions

What is an llms.txt file?

A plain-text file at the root of your site, at /llms.txt, that gives language models a short summary of the site and a list of its key pages. It is a young convention and not every assistant reads it.

How does the generator build the draft?

It reads your home page, takes the page title and meta description for the top of the file, and lists up to 30 links that point to the same site. Links to other sites, email and phone links, and repeats are left out.

Is the draft ready to publish?

Treat it as a starting point. It only knows what your home page links to, so check the link names, remove pages you don't want assistants to follow and add anything important that the home page doesn't link to.

Where do I put the file?

At the root of your domain, so it loads at yourdomain.com/llms.txt. On most platforms that means uploading a file called llms.txt to the same place as your robots.txt.

Will an llms.txt file get my business mentioned by ChatGPT or Perplexity?

No promise. It makes your key pages easier to find for any system that reads it. Whether an assistant names your business depends on much more than this one file.
