A visibility score answers one question: when buyers ask AI assistants about your market, how often are you named, and how high up? This page explains exactly how we work that out, so you can check our numbers instead of taking them on trust.
The score for one answer
Every answer from an assistant gets a small score for your brand, based on where you appear:
| Where you appear | Score |
|---|---|
| Named first | 1.0 |
| Named second | 0.8 |
| Named third | 0.6 |
| Named fourth or later, or mentioned without a rank | 0.4 |
| Not mentioned | 0 |
"Mentioned without a rank" covers answers that talk about you but do not list brands in order. You still get credit for being in the answer, just less than for being on the shortlist.
From answers to a score out of 100
Add up the scores of all the counted answers, divide by the number of counted answers, and multiply by 100. Round to a whole number. That is the visibility score.
For example, take 10 counted answers. You are named first in 3, second in 2, mentioned without a rank in 1, and absent from 4. That adds up to 3 + 1.6 + 0.4 = 5.0, so the score is round(100 × 5.0 / 10) = 50.
A score of 100 would mean you are named first in every answer. A score of 0 means no answer named you.
Answers without an answer
Sometimes an assistant refuses to reply, or returns nothing. Those are not counted: they do not pull your score down and they do not push it up. We show them as "without an answer" next to the count, so you can see how many there were.
Share of voice
The score is about you alone. Share of voice puts you next to the brands you track. It is your mentions divided by all mentions of tracked brands in the same window. If you track yourself and three competitors, and together you are mentioned 40 times, 10 of them yours, your share of voice is 25%.
Share of voice only counts brands you chose to track. A competitor you do not track does not appear in it.
Why every number has an answer count and dates
Assistants do not give the same answer every time. Ask the same question twice and the list of brands can change, or the order can. One answer is an anecdote. Many answers show a pattern.
So every number we show comes with how many answers it is based on and the dates they cover. A score of 60 from 5 answers is a weak signal. A score of 60 from 80 answers over four weeks is a strong one. Showing the count lets you judge which one you are looking at.
How to read changes
When your score moves, look at the answer count first. A small move on a small count is usually noise. A steady move over several weeks, on a healthy count, is worth acting on. Compare like with like: the same assistants, the same questions and the same period.
